Field Experience for Nursing Students Preparing for CPE
1. Meet with your approved preceptor to discuss the roles and
responsibilities of an academic nurse educator (ANE).
2. Explore the different programs and curricula offered at the academic
institution.
3. Become familiar with the organization by reviewing the mission and
vision statements and organizational structure.
4. Check with your preceptor to see if they have a list of the minimum
qualifications (MQs) for a new ANE.
5. Identify an area that you are interested in teaching and interview
faculty who teach in this program to gain their perspectives on the
courses and content delivery methods.
6. Ask for opportunities to be a guest lecturer for a course you are
interested in teaching.
7. Collaborate with your preceptor to create a list of the tasks and the
timeline needed to meet the requirements for your CPE.

5

Field Experience for Nursing Students Evidence:
 In your ePortfolio, include journal entry reflections on your experience as you prepare to begin your
CPE. Describe what you learned about the academic setting and the roles and responsibilities of an
ANE. Consider the knowledge and experience you need to meet the MQs for an ANE position. What
areas do you perceive as strengths and weaknesses for the role of an ANE?
 CPE is your opportunity to engage in authentic experience in the real world of academia, so view
these experience as a bridge to securing a position as a nurse educator.

❖ Analysis of the Need and Readiness for Curriculum Proposal
Identify faculty members and key stakeholders who will agree to participate
in a collaborative needs assessment for a curriculum change that involves a
new or redeveloped course. Request permission to attend a Curriculum
Committee meeting to understand the process involved for proposing new or
revised curricula.

5

Conduct a needs assessment for a new or redeveloped course that will
address an existing gap or need in the curriculum at your academic setting.
Ask your stakeholders for their ideas on a course they would like to see
integrated into the curriculum. Conduct an Affinity Analysis (aka the sticky
note method of brainstorming) to identify and prioritize the academic
organizations stakeholders needs. This method involves capturing ideas
and clustering them into categories/topics. This needs assessment can be
done in person by meeting with faculty and stakeholders or by surveying
ideas using an online survey. To generate ideas, consider comparing
current curricula with the AACN Essentials or ACEN Standards.

10

Collaborate with your preceptor and appropriate faculty to complete a Gap
Analysis by comparing the current state of the curriculum to the desired
state you identified in the needs assessment. Identify needs and resources
that are required to fill the gap for your proposed curriculum change for a
course.

10

Before you can propose your curriculum change you must assess the
organization's readiness for this change. Work with your preceptor, faculty
and organizational leaders to complete a Force Field Analysis to determine
the feasibility of your curriculum proposal and the actions needed to prepare
for a successful integration of your recommended change. Use the Force
Field Analysis template in your Scholarly Curriculum Proposal paper to
assess the academic institution’s readiness for your curriculum change.

15

Field Experience for Nursing Students Evidence:
 Create an Affinity Diagram of the ideas generated during your brainstorming session by clustering
ideas into categories.
 Summarize the information from your need-gap assessment and enter this information in the Need-
Gap Analysis table in your Scholarly Curriculum Proposal template. Complete this table and upload
to your ePortfolio.
 Use the Force Field Analysis (FFA) template in your Scholarly Curriculum Proposal paper to
summarize the key points from your FFA’s assessment of the academic institution’s readiness for
your curriculum change. Upload your FFA completed table to your ePortfolio.
 In your ePortfolio, include journal entry reflections summarizing the results from these different
analytic techniques and what you learned while determining the feasibility of integrating your
proposal. Reflect on lessons learned and how you would improve this aspect of preparing a proposal
for curricular changes.

❖ Curriculum Design
Conduct a literature review on the course that you and your key stakeholders
identified from your need-gap analysis. Begin to construct your Literature
Review Summary Table for your Scholarly Curriculum Proposal Template,
which is located in Taskstream with the performance assessment of this
course. Note theories, models, and strategies that underlie the course that
you identified. Meet with faculty and key stakeholders to review the results of
your literature review.

10

Consult with your preceptor to create a Curriculum Map that aligns your
course major topics to professional standards, as identified by accrediting
agencies. For example, map to the AACN Essentials for Baccalaureate
Education at http://www.aacnnursing.org/Education-Resources/AACN-
Essentials or the ACEN standards for all program levels at
http://www.acenursing.org/resources-acen-accreditation-manual/ Present
your map as a table with your objectives in one column and the essentials or
standards they map to in the second column.

10

Based on the results of your Curriculum Map, create course objectives for
your course. Use the information from your literature review and curriculum
map to construct a Course Content Outline that includes major topics, key
concepts, and course objectives. Meet with your preceptor and key
stakeholders to discuss the course outline. Revise your outline based on
their feedback and suggestions.

10

Meet with your preceptor to review the course syllabus used by the
institution. Use this to guide the development of a Course Syllabus that
includes the following components:
● Course Description
● Course Objectives
● Teaching/Instructional Strategies
● Learning Materials
● Student-Centered Learning Outcome
● Course Policies
● Grading Policy/Scale

15

Evidence:

Upload your Literature Review Summary Table, Curriculum Map, Course Content Outline and
Course Syllabus to your ePortfolio. These items may be in draft format; however, they will need to be
finalized prior to submitting for grade with your Scholarly Curriculum Proposal paper in Assessment
#3.

In your ePortfolio, include journal entry reflections of your experience during the process of creating a
blueprint for your course by identifying major topics, key concepts, objectives and elements for a
course syllabus. What challenges did you face during this process? How did you prioritize topics for
inclusion? How did you scaffold your topics to introduce, reinforce, and master the learning objectives
for your course? What process did you use to develop your course objectives for your course? What
were your successes and challenges during this experience?

❖ Curriculum Development
Use the information and evidence you created during the design phase to
begin development of the elements for your course. Collaborate with your
preceptor and appropriate faculty to create the content, assessments and
learning resources for one unit/module (e.g. one week) of instruction for your
proposed course. Make sure your unit/module contains the following
elements:
1) Course Unit Overview (one paragraph)
2) Lecture Content (e.g. PowerPoint, lecture outline, materials)
3) Learning Resources (one textbook, two addition resources)
4) Learning Activities (e.g. activities, discussions, group work)
5) Formative Assessment
6) Summative Objective Assessment (10 Items with answer key)
7) Summative Performance Assessment (including rubric)

25

Use Panopto to record a three to five-minute Course Introduction video
that introduces and welcomes the students to the course. Provide
information that stimulates interest in the course and lets them know what
they can expect to learn and experience.

5

Evidence:

Upload the required items for your Course Unit/Module to your ePortfolio.

Upload your course introduction video to your ePortfolio

In your ePortfolio, include journal entry reflections on what you learned and experienced while
completing your CPE activities and evidence.
