ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS: EPIDEMIOLOGY CLASS

***Assignment

  1. Discuss about The Virulence of THYPHOID FEVER

- Start Talking  about Thyphoid fever

*Typhoid fever and paratyphoid fever are life-threatening illnesses caused by Salmonellaserotype Typhi and Salmonella serotype Paratyphi, respectively.

“Typhoid is a serious disease is caused by the bacteria Salmonella Typhi. It is transmitted through the ingestion of food or drink, which has been contaminated by the feces of an infected person. Typhoid can cause a high fever, weakness, headache, loss of appetite, stomach pains, and a rash of flat, rose-colored spots. Typhoid is deadly without treatment, killing up to one-third of people who become infected. It can be treated with antibiotics, but drug-resistant strains are a growing problem. Typhoid is rare in the United States, and most U.S. citizens who get the disease get it while traveling. This deadly infection strikes millions of people a year around the world”.

Most people in the United States with typhoid fever or paratyphoid fever become infected while traveling abroad, most often to countries where these diseases are common. https://www.cdc.gov/typhoid-fever/index.html

-Discuss about the virulence of Thyphoid fever (See 2 articles uploaded) THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT TOPIC TO ADDRESS!

- You may discuss a little about… CDC has conducted surveillance for typhoid fever since 1975. State and local health officials use a standard report form to report detailed epidemiologic information on laboratory-confirmed cases, including patient demographic and clinical information, typhoid vaccination status, and travel history. A case of typhoid fever is defined as an acute illness compatible with typhoid fever in which Salmonella serotype Typhi was isolated from a normally sterile site or from stool or urine. Travel-associated typhoid fever is defined as illness in a person who traveled outside of the United States in the 30 days before illness began, and domestically acquired typhoid fever is defined as illness in a person without such a travel history.

*Discuss about Thyphoid fever outbreak in the US in 2010 (Briefly)

Multistate Outbreak of Human Typhoid Fever Infections Associated with Frozen Mamey Fruit Pulp

Typhoid fever is a very rare illness in the United States among non-international travelers and can cause serious symptoms, often times requiring hospitalization. Typhoid fever is contracted when food and water are contaminated by an infected individual and are then consumed by other people.

-Discuss the importance for healthcare providers to provide education about prevention and vaccination, especially when aware that patients are going out of the country (Include vaccination)- Recommendations from the CDC: https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/diseases/typhoid
