Travelbee’s theory of the nurse client relationship

Advanced nursing practice is developed from years of theories and evidenced based practice. The theory that speaks to my future advanced nursing practice is Joyce Travelbee's theory of the Nurse-client relationship (Moreira de Freitas et al., 2018). As a nurse practitioner, you can provide all the care that you need to, but if there is a poor relationship between the nurse practitioner there usually are great outcomes in terms of patient's listening and following through with caring for self. A therapeutic relationship is a huge part of nursing because it leads to trust in the relationship between a patient and a nurse (Mirhaghi, Sharafi, Bazzi & Hasanzadeh, 2017). Good communication also is similar to having a caring relationship which I know is another theory in nursing that is followed.

An example of why this theory fits my new role as a nurse practitioner is my provider is a nurse practitioner. She always listens and shows empathy when I have an issue. She doesn't ever judge a patient and gains their trust and respect. Therefore patients are more willing to take the APRN's recommendations more seriously. Sumner explains that open communication among providers and patients is one of the most pertinent aspects to care (2012). As an APRN, I hope to have my patients respect so that when I recommend certain lifestyle changes or treatments they are hopefully more opt to listen and partake.

Nursing theories provide a flawless framework for nurses to serve patients while mastering certain essential principles that continue to add value to their service. Advanced practice nurses often have to play dual roles of providing excellent patient care and serving the organization they are part of (Jones, 2010). As a result, they have to do justice to both the roles by clearly setting goals and achieving them. As today’s medical profession focuses on a multidisciplinary approach in order to provide effective patient care, advanced practice nurses are compelled to maintain professional boundaries at all times by taking inspiration from nursing theories.

Nursing theories guide practicing nurses in several ways (Smith & Parker, 2015). Role Modelling Theory introduced by Erikson, which reminds practicing nurses of the need to provide care with compassion, speaks well to me as an advanced nursing practitioner. This theory inspires me a lot as it treats each and every patient I come across in my service as a sum total of his or her physical, spiritual, mental and emotional bodies. This theory suggests that human beings are always driven by their need to fulfill their needs. In other words, inability to fulfill their needs leads to sickness of one kind or other.

Role Modeling Theory directly speaks to me because I have chosen to become an advanced practicing nurse as part of realizing my life purpose. I believe helping others lead a healthy life, both physically and mentally, requires me to accept my patients unconditionally. In other words, I must treat others as my own self in order to understand their problems from their own perspectives and help them recover from their sickness. Florence Nightingale, the role model nurse for generations to come, says that creating a favorable environment for patients to recover is the foremost responsibility of nurses (Lynch, 2015). I look forward to becoming a role model that would help me connect intimately with my patients as an advanced practicing nurse thereby enabling them recover quickly.
