NLN Hallmarks of Excellence in Nursing Education Curriculum Assessment Report Card Assignment

Purpose:

The purpose of this assignment is to systematically evaluate a nursing curriculum for strengths and areas needing improvement based on the NLN Hallmarks of Excellence in Nursing Education.

Objectives:

This assignment addresses the following course objective:

  • Analyze how nursing curriculum influences healthcare outcomes for individuals, populations, or systems. (SLO #9)

Reading Assignments:

  • Iwasiw & Goldenberg Chapters 1-7
  • Billings & Halstead Chapter 5-6

Directions: Using the NLN Hallmarks of Excellence in Nursing Education Curriculum Assessment Report Card (posted in BlackBoard, Module 1), evaluate a nursing curriculum for strengths and areas needing improvement.  You may select any ADN, BSN, or ABSN program from a community college or university to evaluate.  You can elect to research the program online or perform an interview with a faculty member from the selected nursing program to complete the report card.  Once you complete the report card, discuss the following questions:

  1. Is the program’s curriculum flexible and reflects current societal and health care trends and issues, research findings, and innovative practices, as well as local and global perspectives?
  2. Does the curriculum provide experiential cultural learning activities that enhance students’ abilities to think critically, reflect thoughtfully, and provide culturally-sensitive, evidence-based nursing care to diverse populations?
  3. Does the curriculum emphasize student values development, socialization to the new role, commitment to lifelong learning, and creativity?
  4. Does the curriculum provide learning experiences that prepare graduates to assume roles that are essential to quality nursing practice?
  5. Does the curriculum provide learning experiences that support evidence-based practice, multidisciplinary approaches to care, and student achievement of clinical competence?
  6. Is the curriculum evidence-based?
  7. Is the design and implementation of the program innovative and does it seek to build on traditional approaches to nursing education?

Write a formal APA paper covering the items above. You should use appropriate headings throughout the paper to ensure you have answered all questions appropriately. The paper should be a minimum of three pages, excluding the title page and reference page. Be sure to use in-text citations and include a reference list of resources used in completing this assignment. References should be current, professional sources. If a faculty member was interviewed, include their title and contact information within the paper.
