Interview with an APN leader

The student will interview a nurse practitioner or advanced practice nurse who is or has served in a leadership role and works in primary care. Leadership roles may include but are not limited to, association leader, policy leaders, member of a practice or health care committee, member of a board of directors for an association, hospital or clinic, manager of a leader of other providers, community leader, etc.
FOR FNP STUDENTS: The Nurse Practitioner, preferably an FNP, must work in a Primary Care setting.
FOR NURSE LEADER STUDENTS: The nurse leader must be in a Director or higher position. The preferable interviewee would hold a doctorate degree.
FOR NURSE EDUCATOR STUDENTS: The nurse educator must teach in an online or hybrid program. The preferable interviewee would hold a doctorate degree.
1. Write a paper addressing a set of student identified pre-interview questions. Please include, title page, and references, according to APA 6th Edition format, content should be 6 to 8 double-spaced pages.
2. The paper may be written using an interview style Q&A or in paragraph format.
3. The paper should include an introduction that introduces the interviewee’s name, credentials, practice, employment and position(s). The introduction should also identify why the student believes the interviewee is a leader.
4. Include a section at the end of the paper on a Self-Reflection of the insights gained from conducting this interview.
5. Save the file with Student First Name_Last Name_APN_Interview
6. Submit completed assignment to the D2L Dropbox.

The student may use any of the following sample questions or develop their own questions.
• Why did you become a nurse/APN? Describe what it means to be an APN.
• Describe your work and professional experience prior to pursuing an advanced practice degree.
• Describe how you previous nursing experience prepared you for your role as an APN.
• Describe your leadership roles as a registered nurse and as an APN.
• Describe an experience that has shaped you as an APN leader.
• What is your definition of an APN in your current role and setting?
• In your current role, are you being utilized to the fullest potential as an ANP? What leadership have you provided in ensuring that APN are utilized to their fullest education and experience?
• Discuss your involvement in nursing associations. What role do you see associations playing in improving the health of the community, in promoting nursing and APN?
• How did you come about becoming an APN? When did you realize you wanted to be an ANP?
• Where do you see your career in 5 years? 10 years?
• What was the most challenging part of being an RN? What is the challenging part of being a NP? What was/is the most rewarding for each of these roles?
• Did you have a mentor to help guide you in your role transitions from RN to APN? To your leadership role?
• Describe your use of evidence based practice to guide your practice. What leadership role do you play in promoting evidence-based practices?
• Do you serve on any nursing, clinical, interdisciplinary, medical, or community boards? Describe your role?
• Discuss the reasons for your involvement in a leadership role.
• What advice would you give novice APN who are interested in becoming nurse leaders?
