Nursing theory is a systematic structure of ideas and purposes designed to guide the nursing practice. In nursing, there are four types of nursing theories which are metatheory, nursing practice theories, mid-range nursing theories, and grand nursing theories. Middle range theories are very beneficial in clinical practice, constructing clinical practice strategies, and nursing research. Theories assist researchers in healthcare to link various phenomena (Finn, 2011). They can hence organize information in a way that the audience can understand and apply. In fact, utilizing them makes it easier for researchers to ask the right questions and thus get the desirable results in the end.

The middle-range descriptive theory is one of the common types of approaches used in research. It classifies the characteristics of a phenomenon by summarizing the similarities found during a study. The article by Rogers (2012), Leaders communication styles: A descriptive analysis of health care professionals, utilizes the theory. The empirical method is applied, where observations are made in their natural setting. The study describes various types of leadership styles implemented in a health sciences division in the United States. The task and relationship behavior of the professionals is analyzed, with the aim of linking the information to the achievement of the expected outcomes in an organizational setting.

By applying the descriptive theory, Rogers (2012) achieves a higher level of awareness of the interconnections between leadership styles in healthcare. They can draw some patterns in the study, which further helps them or the reader to apply the information in other settings. In fact, it is possible to forecast on how leaders behave in the field. It is clear that basing a research on an established theory enriches the value of the findings (Severinsson, & Holm, 2012). Polit and Beck (2017) further explain that the theories guide the aspects of developing the study questions, design, and analysis. As a result, plausible approaches to health issues can be proposed (Cantrell, 2011). Further, a facilitation of decision making in the field is achieved.

In addition, theories aid researchers in the healthcare sector to achieve their goals by asking the right questions. A perfect example of this reality is the desirable results obtained by Rogers (2012) after utilizing a descriptive theory. Their findings on styles of leadership are valuable and applicable in the field.

Question:
What is a specific example of how you would use Roger\’s theory in leadership style?
