Diversity in Singapore

The population of Singapore is a diverse population with different people and ethnic groups who came from different countries during the colonial era and settle in the country. The groups consist of the Chinese who are the dominant people in Singapore, Malays, Indians and the Eurasians.

Though each of the racial groups still remain distinctive in celebrating their festivals and religious events they open heartedly share and celebrate other cultures existing in the country. This acceptance, sensitivity and respect of other cultures are in clear contrast to the strained ethnic relations that exist within many of the neighboring countries.

Sir Stamford Raffles, a British colonial administrator who established Singapore as British out post and trading colony, established schools of native languages and he did all his best effort to see that the local businesses flourish in the country. Later that time, in 1923 he drafted a constitution that outlawed slavery gaming of wild animals where people went for the animals to get horns from rhinoceros and tusks for elephants (Janus Corporate Solutions 2010). The drafting of the constitution and the country enjoying its peaceful harmony led to abundance of merchants and migrants moving to the island where the business rapidly emerged.

The dominant business entities in Singapore are the Chinese companies. They began trading companies, became financiers and big company share investors and then went to food processing and distribution businesses which never failed to yield fruits for them. Unfortunately the distribution of various ethnic communities in various professional and god paying jobs is not uniform. Chinese are the most dominant in the job market of professional administrative and managerial jobs whereas Malays and Indians are least dominant in these highly skilled jobs because of their large number in the population.

It is easy for a western employee to work or do any other business in Singapore as the business culture is fairly westernized. Business meetings are formal and polite. Singapore has a long history of encouraging foreign workers and business investors by giving them support they need and not imposing any legislation on them so the problems of relocating and settling in have been anticipated and solved. The Chinese participate more in activities than both Indians and Malays because employment in extensive sectors were mainly Chinese commerce and small-scale industries where hiring demanded command of Chinese regional language and personal recommendation about the person’s profile on education or working experience which adversely limited the Malays and Indians.

Since when the British administrators withdrew from Singapore, large number of Malays who had been employed in British armed forces has lost those secure well paying positions. Poor command of English and lack of tertiary education have made Malays loose public sector jobs which has made the Malay community go for those low income positions or white collar jobs (US Library Congress) traditionally the Chinese, Malays and Indians have made use of mediation to resolve disputes but due to British colonialism, national laws and court litigations became the means of dispute resolution.

In the current legislation rules of the country of Singapore, you find that there is no such legislation regarding the protection of human rights in companies but there are minimum standards of workers safety and terms of employment for workers based in Singapore. This has helped the companies based in this country to produce the best commodities as they have quality experienced workers on technology.

Just like Singapore, diversity in the US is now considered as the nation’s greatest asset. In fact it has emerged that US is more culturally diverse country than any other country in the world. It is only affecting the economy since the needs of Americas diverse consumer groups has become pragramatic strategy of all kinds. Multicultural outreach is good for minorities hoping to own their own first home, an initiative that offers benefits to realtors by substantially increasing their market share in this relatively untapped market.

The fusion of cultures in America is so unique and exceptional that the citizens can be proud of their original culture and heritage. Diversity of the US not only presents a host of intimate scenes of culture and heritage but also gives a document explaining about struggles of nationalities to integrate all the societies of America, also giving the highlights of the strength and integrity of various cultural leaders and thinkers since the past (WorldandISchool.com 2010)

We have seen the business structure in Singapore is very stable with the people enjoying the cultural diversities and political harmony enjoying tourist attraction reserves and sites like the safari night park where tourists visit with visibility hindrances due to darkness. Singapore is one of the most growing countries in exportation of products.  It commonly exports information and technology products like the computers and other electronics. It also exports chemicals and this has brought a high economic boost to the nation. Therefore I would observe the culture of the rising business investments and the political peace and harmony of the nation.
