You remember that in your journey as a social change activist, you found it was helpful to reflect and record your thoughts in a journal. You share this idea and the group decides to develop a journal to go along with a series of workshop modules that is going to be offered. After the journal has been formatted, you volunteer to complete the entries to serve as a model for your upcoming attendees.

The following are the journal entries that you need to complete:

Journal Entry 1:

What Is a Social Change Agent?
Based on your interpretation of the resources in Module 1, what is your definition of social change agent? In other words, how would you complete the following statement: A social change agent is… (1 paragraph)
What Inspires You?
From your sampling of the individual profiles provided in the resources, select at least two individuals whose stories inspired or resonated with you. Identify these individuals and explain what about each of these people and their social change activities most inspired you. Explain your reasoning with relevant details and/or examples. (2–3 paragraphs)
Journal Entry 2:

What Kind of Social Change Agent Can You Be?
Chapter 3 of Paul Loeb\’s Soul of a Citizen examines some of the factors that hold people back from social activism. Think about the messages and signals that you took from your family, your peers, your community, or other groups about becoming more involved in social change efforts. Discuss these messages. To what extent did they encourage or discourage you from becoming more involved in social change activities? The chapter also discusses how each of us has unique talents and passions that can be applied to our social change efforts. What abilities, interests, skills, or experiences do you have that could be used to help the causes that you believe in? Support your points with relevant details and/or examples. (2-3 paragraphs)
What Cause or Movement Resonates With You?
From the resources provided in Module 2, choose a cause or movement that resonates with you. This can be a cause or movement that you already support or one that you may someday consider supporting. Identify the cause or movement and explain why you chose it. How does it inspire you? Propose at least two first steps you could take toward getting involved. Again, explain your reasoning with relevant details and/or examples. (1–2 paragraphs)

Journal Entry 3:What Are the Benefits of Working for Positive Social Change?
Referring to the resources in Module 3 and with the cause or movement you have chosen in mind, what do you think would be the greatest benefits of that effort, either for yourself or for others, or both? Explain your reasoning with relevant details and/or examples. (2 paragraphs)
How Do You Perceive the Impact of Your Efforts?
Consider how important it is to you to see an immediate impact from your social change efforts. Then recall Chapter 5 of Soul of a Citizen, in which author Paul Loeb discusses the possible unseen effects of one’s social change efforts. Carefully review his examples of people who acted out of conviction without any way of knowing what the ultimate effect of their actions might be.
With these thoughts in mind: Would you be willing to participate in a movement or volunteer for a cause if you knew the results of those efforts might not be evident until long after your involvement came to an end? In your response, explain how Loeb’s thinking and his examples affected your response. (1–2 paragraphs)
Journal Entry 4:

What Strategies Can Help Overcome the Challenges of Social Activism?
Consider the social change cause or movement that resonated with you. If you were to decide to become more involved with this cause or movement, what might be some of the biggest challenges or difficulties for you, and what strategies could you use to overcome these difficulties? Or, if you are already a volunteer or activist, what are some of the biggest challenges you have experienced in your role, and, based on the resources, what strategies could you use to overcome the challenges you faced or are facing? Explain your reasoning with relevant details and/or examples. (2–3 paragraphs)
What Strategies Do You Recommend to New Social Change Activists to Avoid Burnout?
Based on your experiences and/or the resources for Module 4, what strategies would you recommend to new volunteers or activists when they get discouraged, overwhelmed, or burned out? Explain your reasoning with relevant details and/or examples. (1–2 paragraphs)
