Connecting Self and Culture

Social sites like face book and other popular search engines such as Google are used to seek information on places, events and people all around the globe. People draw their profiles in many internet sites with the intention of broadening their connection with their friends, acquaintances and society as a whole (Wehrli, 2008). Information gathered from these personal profiles says tones about a person. They are the basis used to judge someone.

I conducted an online search of my name from common search engines such as Google, face book and twitter. The profile at face book is very brief and only indicates Salamat’s like and interest. There isn’t adequate information of what she does on a daily basis.

Other than her name there are no other personal details. Information such as education background, marital status, and place of employment would come in handy in understanding Salamat better. An online search at peekyou.com just gave minor details as well. However, unlike face-book a little more detail such as the age and location of the individual is given. Salamat is 31 years old and lives in Atlanta, Georgia. To narrow the search further details such as possible relatives are indicated. This is important as it helps the searcher to determine whether that is the same Salamat s/he is looking for.

Looking at the profile, there are several assumptions that arise. First Salamat is a very reserved person. This is clear on the very minor personal details that she has given on profile. It is apparent that she is not keen to share all her personal details with the world. She is also not interactive. An interactive person would give as many details as possible so as to meet formers friend, colleagues and family through these sites. Salamat Johnson also loves arts and music. This is evident from her activities and interest profiles. She loves to listen to music, watch movies and read books. By looking at these activities it is clear that she would love to meet individuals and personalities with the same interest as her. The activities and interest also show that she loves to have fun.

As a potential employer I would gather that Salamat is not very social and thus skills like team work may not be easy for her. However, this assumption would be made purely on the basis of the little information on her profile. It thus may be wrong or right. Overall, the profile information provided on the several search engines as well as the social sites is inadequate. To make a proper analysis more content may be required. In the employment arena though Salamat would preferably work in a slow paced setting where she can be productive at her own speed and gratification without constant direction. Jobs such as an artist, musician and designer would suit her. Fast paced careers in the corporate world would appear cumbersome and restrictive (Premuzic, 2011).

It’s a personal choice to have a prominent or minimal online presence. I chose to have a minimal online presence so as to keep off unwanted acquaintances and friendships. I love to have a realistic pool of friends that I know on a personal level. The minimal online presence means that the people I interact with on this site recognize me on a familial level. I am also privy on including personal details such as telephone numbers for fear of this information being used for wrong intentions.
