Community and Problem-Solving Policing

 Introduction

No one will deny that the relationship of the community and the law enforcers or the police is of much important to any society setting. If we enhance a good relationship between those groups, the society enjoys quality security during their work operations. According to some research conduced on the community and problem solving policing, the results shows that America can hold a better position of enacting law enforcement if policies of the past are put into the operations. Community policing is the only way which can help in solving community problems because the current world we are living is full of technology and criminals are becoming educated day after day. Later in this essay we shall see some of community policing which are supposed to be employed in the current society and also who the federal government has entered into community policing, not forgetting about the “broken windows model.”

Community Policing

Most of people will wonder what community policing means. Community policing as defined by those who actually employ it is the act of current policing which is aimed at involving the police and the citizens in ensuring security have been observed in the society. Citizens and the authority work together in coming up with some solutions to some of the problems which are affecting the society at large. Some of people define community policing as philosophy by which social disorder and crimes are solved with the help of police services, (Dempsey, & Forst, 2009). The most emphasize in this approach is where by the police and citizens are required to work together in preventing crimes from happening. This kind of solving problem have replaced the old tradition methods where police were required to conduct a police patrol in ensuring that crimes are not happening. In order to enhance quality community problem solving, an individual officer is selected who oversees what activates are conducted in that geographical area assigned to him or her. In the current set up, we can say that community policing have played a major role in reducing the level of crimes and social disorder because the society is expected to work with the police force, (Dempsey, & Forst, 2009).

 Problem-Solving Policing

When we talk of problem solving policing, we are almost looking at the community policing. These two approaches of solving problems are almost the same. Problem solving policing figures out that most of the crimes which are conducted in our environment are caused by the social problems which are among our environment. In order to come up with a clear and quality method of solving problems, a combination of community policing and problem policing creates a good room both for the community and the entire police force. Goldstein is the founder of this problem solving approach in the year 1979 which was initially called the problem oriented policing. In this approach, police forces are required to look at the key issues which contribute to incidents of the crime and social disorder. This approach differs from the traditional policing where police dealt with an incident individually. Similar to the community policing, problem solving policing also calls for community support in finding solutions to the crimes and social disorders which are affecting the community, (Dempsey, & Forst, 2009).

One of the unique strategies which problem solving policing employ is that it does use four major categories of dealing with any problem. Those four parts which are used in the problem solving policing include scanning, analysis, response and lastly the assessment. This is one of the best approaches of solving problems because the group involved in discussing the problem does not deal with a singe problem. It is a good approach because when one problem is discussed, it creates room of coming out with other possible crimes which could had resulted from that single crime. Having identified the problem, the involved group takes a step of collecting information about the problem which will lead to what were the possible causes and what should be done in order not to repeat such mistake any more. In this approach, the groups involved are given a duty not just to detect and deal with the crime or social disorder but also to find solutions which will prevent that behavior to be repeated again, (Dempsey, & Forst, 2009).

Broken Windows Model

The assumption behind this approach is that when those crimes and social disorder are not dealt with at their inception, a serious effect will develop some effect to the entire society. This policing approach was developed by Kelling and Wilson in the year 1982. It is believed that broken windows model played a major role in the way policing was done in the past and also it holds some root in the future. Unlike the community or the problem solving policing which has been discussed above, this type of policing provides a systematic way of thinking to the community. According to broken windows model the community was happy when the police were conducting their patrol by foot in those places which believed to have some problems. The society also believed that the police force were in a position to know which types of crimes were going on and therefore deal with them accordingly. When the vehicle came the community felt that the police had abandoned them because they were conducting their patrols using the motorists. This approach was not good after the introduction of the motorist because the police changed their operation to zero tolerance style which affected the community, (Dempsey, & Forst, 2009).

         Federal government

The federal government started in the year 1992 when the president Bill Clinton looked at the community oriented policing and decided to add some police force in the society. According to the federal government, the increases in the community activities which are conducted by the community and the police force, the numbers of crimes and social disorder have significantly reduced. There are certain goals of the Federal government’s integration into community policing. Some of the key concern points of the program were increasing the police task in the streets, coming up with current technologies to detect and prevent social disorder and crimes, police innovation and finally ensuring that there is a close partnership of the force task and the community, (Dempsey, & Forst, 2009).According to my own opinion, the federal government in collaboration with the community policing is the best policing approach because it provides interaction of the citizens and the police in dealing with the crimes and social disorder and finding solutions to them, (Dempsey, & Forst, 2009).

Conclusion

There are different types of policing which are used to deal and solve problems in the society. Community and problem solving policing should be an approach which integrates police and the citizens.
