Cholera etiology and preventive measures by health officials

Cholera etiology and preventive measures by health officials

ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS: EPIDEMIOLOGY CLASS    Response #2

***Assignment:

1.

  • Discuss about Cholera and its etiology (cause) and modes of transmission
  • The importance to approach the chain of infection (infectious agent, susceptible host, portal of entry, means of transmission, portal of exit and reservoirs.
  • Discuss How health officials can intervene in the chain of infection to prevent the spread of this highly virulent bacteria? Campaigns of vaccination (however doesn’t offer complete protection), educating the population about safe food, water precautions and personal hygiene measures.

-What is Cholera? The cause?

It is true that the bacteria, vibrio cholera, is the proximate, necessary cause of cholera.  However, it is important to consider the chain of infection and the factors that can be manipulated to prevent the transmission of cholera.  How do you think health officials can intervene in the chain of infection to prevent the spread of this highly virulent bacteria?

Possible chains of infection: immunocompromise immune system, hyegine iegine, contact with the bacteria

***Health officials can intervene with Immunization campaings and education on how to prevent the transmission

***Education: avoiding….   https://www.cdc.gov/cholera/infection-sources.html

-Natural infection and currently available vaccines offer incomplete protection of relatively short duration; no multivalent vaccines are available for O139 infections.

Educating on following  safe food and water precautions and personal hygiene measures.

-A person can get cholera by drinking water or eating food contaminated with the cholera bacterium. Large epidemics are often related to fecal contamination of water supplies or street vended foods. The disease is occasionally spread through eating raw or undercooked shellfish that are naturally contaminated. CDC https://www.cdc.gov/cholera/infection-sources.html

-Avoiding eating …. Brackish and marine waters are the natural environment for the etiologic agents of cholera, Vibrio cholerae serogroup O1 or O139. There are no known animal hosts for Vibrio cholerae, however, the bacteria attach themselves easily to the chitin-containing shells of crabs, shrimps, and other shellfish, which can be a source for human infections when eaten raw or undercooked.

Thank you and let me know if you have any questions

  • Please don’t start with sentences that start with “this, these, it…etc” this is vague and not use in formal writing. Need to specify what we are talking about. Also don’t use citations in the middle of the sentence. Avoid “as well as” as much as possible.

Thank you!
