Article Analysis

With the passing of the federal legislation on compulsory education to all children with special needs, there has been an outgrowth of in-home schooling in various regions in the United States. The in-home schooling is provided by the school districts meant for all students with health problems, be it mental or physical, that acts as an alternative to the attendance of the regular classes at schools. Hospitals and home teachers have indicated that the in home schooling prevents students with major depressive disorder to effectively learn.

Newman Cara through a qualitative narrative research tries to answer the question on how best to serve students with restricted learning abilities within the environment of home or environment. The main aim that the researcher aims to negative is to dealing with the pedagogical need of the students within such environments. The research is highly justified based on the fact that there are limited studies that have specifically dealt with the appropriate pedagogical instructions that suit these kinds of students in the home –hospital setting.

Newman aims at finding data through describing the population and using experts who have already experienced educating students in the home-hospital setting to find how they learn.  I agree that through this method, the researcher would be capable of achieving his main goal in finding out the most appropriate pedagogical instructions to use. Through this approach the researcher clearly identified the challenges that students in this kind of learning environment are experiencing.

Newman concludes that it is important for instructors to develop applicable and practical information on how to deal with the students. The shortcomings of this study is that there are none of these practical approaches suggested that work hand in had  with the observed results and more so on the students with major depressive disorder.
