Competency 3 case study

The Director of Quality Initiatives at a large hospital wants to implement a program to help prevent medical errors. He proposes to adopt the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s  (2011)  20 Tips to Prevent Medical Errors.   (included in competency set content) The manager has asked staff to sign postings showing that they agree with the tips and to wear buttons that read “Ask me if I have washed my hands”

Some long term employees are resistant to the requirement to sign postings and wear the hand washing buttons because they believe that these are demeaning requirements that could also indicate an admission of committing medical errors.  These employees have been quality employees who take pride in their delivery of care and are well versed in department and organizational procedures.

Apply the Rational Decision-Making model to this case.  What is the problem? Analyze the resistance of some employees based on Kanter’s Ten Classic Reasons People Resist Change. Propose alternative solutions and implementation plans.  State how your solution/alternative is likely to be more successful than the current proposal of the director.
