Obesity is a health epidemic that spans across all ages, races, and genders. Obesity is a growing concern in the United States as approximately 35 percent of Americans are obese (Gonzalez-Campoy, 2019). Overweight and obesity is defined as having a body mass index (BMI) of 30kg/m2. A BMI is calculated by dividing the weight in kilograms by the square of the height in meters. According to a study conducted by the CDC in 2013, every state in America was revealed to have an obesity prevalence of 20 percent or greater. Statistics also show that obesity is more prevalent in middle-aged adults, aged 40-59 (Gonzalez-Campoy, 2019).
Community efforts to help combat obesity include community efforts that support healthy eating and an active lifestyle, early childhood education, and proper nutrition offered in schools, colleges, and in the workplace. Some resources to help people manage their own weight and fight against obesity are the ChooseMyPlate website that helps people look up nutritional information on foods, plan meals, and track their nutritional intake (CDC, 2019).
When implementing self-management strategies to combat obesity, the social cognitive theory can help clients to adopt healthy behaviors by strengthening their knowledge about the subject of obesity and discussing benefits of positive outcomes (Sharma, 2017). As nurses and primary care providers it is important to emphasize that the ultimate goal of sustainable weight loss and maintaining a healthy weight improves the quality of life including emotional and behavioral well-being (Goldie, Brown, & Gordon, 2012).
